After several weeks of cold, icy weather, conditions for the 2010 version of the Les Witton Dartford 10 mile race were nearly perfect for the 920 runners who tackled the hills and valleys of this undulating course. 35 Harriers took on the challenge under azure skies and, although times were slower than they might have been, this well-organised race was a hit with the runners. At the finish, competitors were rewarded with a smart black and white bag and plentiful supplies of water and bananas. Our men's team came third overall, and our ladies were fourth in their competition. Congratulations to all of the following who completed the course:

I know of three PBs - well done to Joanne Nicholson, Ian Forrest and Paul Ahsunnollah. If anyone else set their fastest time in a 10-mile race since 01.01.2007, please let me know. Please note that we use gun times as they have been published as this means that you cannot be beaten by someone who starts and finishes behind you!

OMG, did you have to show everyone my embarrassing time! I agree it was an excellent race, just a shame the training for it was not what it should have been...

Well done Jo - all those spinning classes must have paid off!

Rosie,

My time was 12 minutes slower than my best time last year; someone else managed to add 13 minutes to his/her best time from 2009, so you are neither alone nor least improved in your efforts.

I had a great race for my first 10 miler (I have done the Thanet 1/2 before but 3 years ago before injury and lazyness stopped for 2 years) with a good battle with Graham up the final hill. I caught him up by mile 8 where he warned me of the impending hill. He then left me for a bit before I managed to catch him up and overtake on a big push! I think our little friendly battle up the hill was a favourite moment for me.

A really lovely race and a PB for me.

A quick question - will my actual chip time be recorded as my PB or the gun time?

Hi Everyone,

I have been informed that entries are filling up fast for the Ashford 10K. There is a race limit 750 and they are already over 400. 10Kevents are extremely popular and this is also a County Championship event. So if you are planning to do this one, please get your entry in soon.

David P,

As we go by gun times at the finish, it only seems fair to record those for PBs. This can make it harder to get PBs in bigger events, but it conversely makes it easier to get them in smaller ones. I managed to get a PB at Lydd last year after taking 10 seconds to cross the start line, beating my time at Paddock Wood where it took me a minute and a half. My actual time from start to finish was nearly identical.

A reminder to all: to qualify for bonus points for setting a PB, you have to have beaten a time set over that same distance since 1st January 2007. It does not matter if you were a Harrier at the time or not, but you do have to run the event as a Harrier. Any new members who may join tonight are not eligible to score in the club championship for the Dartford race no matter how well they did!

That should make it easier to get a PB next time then as I was at least 1:30 getting over the start line :)

Just to clarify, as this was my first 10 mile race and my first Harrier race (apart from the Turkey Run) my time is not eligible to score in the club championship?

That was my first race since Maidstone half. My training being stopped by the nasty weather. I think i faired pretty well. with a blister on each foot one rather bloody, Bad chaffing due to forgetting to put on the vaseline, :o :o and a really nagging ache in my left leg spot on 9 miles. And the thought of an uphill finish which turned out to be flat >:( >:(

My last ten mile was Sittingbourne which turned a 1:25 so 1:35 :'( :'( :'(
Oh well. Roll on Ashford 10K :) :)

David P,

You have scored several points in the club championship, based on your finishing position, but cannot claim points for a PB if you have not previously set a time at that distance. Those runners who, for example, joined the Harriers after last year's Maidstone Half, are eligible for bonus points if they set a PB at Paddock Wood, although they will need to let me know that they have done so.

Excellent - thanks a lot.

Next race is the Tunbridge Wells half so will set a PB time over that distance so that so I have one to try and beat in the Paddock Wood race :)

The second of our club championship races saw us take to the country lanes near Ashford for the first 10K of the year. Conditions were cool and overcast, and the downhill course proved much to the liking of many of the 609 finishers. 38 Harriers were present (is this a record?) and they were led home by Jon Bond, who set a new PB, in 37.40 and, for the ladies, Sharon Hawkins (who was 2nd lady overall) in 38.14. Our ladies team were also second overall, with Sharon being joined by Penny Holden, Paula Stockton and Julie Stoppani.

Congratulations to the following, who all completed the course:

Please let me know if you set a PB in this race - there were so many of you who did that I have lost track of who said they did (and by how much) and who did not! You can do it at the club on a Wednesday night (although I am not there this week) or by sending me a private message via this website.

For the record, 53 members are already on the scoresheet for the 2010 Championships...
