We now have provisional dates for this year's Harriers organised races
Weald of Kent 10 - Sunday 14 June
Half Marathon - Sunday 18 October
Turkey Run - Sunday 13 December
Due both Grant and myself being long term hampered with our serious injuries we are looking for some additional help, in particular we are looking for a treasurer to look after the accounts for the 3 races. To try and reduce the amount of printing required it is intended to email entry forms to all clubs and set up on line entries for all 3 events, race info and route maps will be sent to all entries electronically leaving only race numbers to be posted. We will still need to have entry forms available at races preceding the events so if anybody can assist with the printing and distribution of forms it would be greatly appreciated.
In addition there are many tasks such as erecting advance warning signs, letter drops, course checking ,erecting and in particular removing course signage, i know its nice to disappear after a race but spare a thought for those left to clear up afterwards, if 15 people lent a hand we're probably be done and dusted in half an hour instead of 2 of us spending the rest of the day and ending up getting thoroughly p***ed off.
So if you can assist in anyway please come have a chat with either Grant or myself.
Bob

I'm no treasurer, but would be happy to get more involved with other aspects of running these events. Let me know what I can do. Are you going to have a planning meeting that those of us interested can come to and get an idea of the size and nature of the tasks?

I am happy help out where I can. But I am not good at accounting so I do not think I would make a treasurer.

Hi Bob
I would be happy to help with any pre-organisation - you mention things like letter drops to residents etc, but I am planning to run the Weald 10 / Maidstone Half as they fit nicely with my running goals for the year. As I haven't run these distances for quite some time, I'm not sure what shape I'll be in to help clear signage afterwards, but as long as I've not collapsed, then I'll lend a hand there too.
Unfortunately I don't think I would have the time to commit to being a treasurer, but if you could outline what is required, I would consider it.
I'm not sure about the Turkey Run as I really don't know my plans for December.
Let me know when you have the planning meeting - ideally on a Wednesday before we run, I guess?

I had a chat with Grant on Wednesday and am happy to take on Race Treasurer, but if anyone else wants to do it then just shout.
I'm working towards Club domination!

Hi Bob,
Tim and I will be around to help out with all of these races. As relative newcomers to the club one thing that we have found difficult is that we haven't done the races or helped out before, and the instructions for what is involved are not always that clear. For example, we would happily have helped out with setting up the Maidstone half as it starts round the corner from our house, but we did not know the route until the day. There wasn't a huge amount of advance warning on when help would be needed either (e.g. we only knew on the Wednesday beforehand that the toilets would be set up on Saturday, and had already made plans for Saturday by then). Likewise, when we marshalled at the Turkey Run, neither of us knew the route so had to be shown where to go. I'm sure lots of people would be happy to do little things to help out, it's just a matter of communicating what those things are!

Thanks to every one that has offered their services for this years events. All of your comments have been taken on board and we will improving our communication with you all . Grant and I are having a meeting with the new Police Officer in charge of planning for the half marathon in the next couple of weeks, on first impressions he seems to be far more approachable the the previous occupier of the post.
Due to a clash with the North Downs Run the Weald of Kent 10 has been moved to Sunday 21 June

:-/Hello
Just wondered if anyone could tell me whether the Maidstone half course is very hilly please? I am running about 8 miles several times a week over quite a hilly course at the moment but would like to be prepared if this is a strenous half!
Many thanks.
Ali

Hi Ali, I think the course is probably best described as undulating. There's no steep climbs, but there are a few long steady ones, particularly the stretch up through Hollingbourne village. If you go the half-marathon page on the club website www.maidstoneharriers.co.uk, you'll find a link to the race route. To the right of the route map you'll see a 'Hill Profile' button, and that should give you some idea of how hilly it is
