Hi all, I hope you are all managing to survive in this very cold, wintry week.
Hazardous Conditions bring KFL Cross Country to a Slippery Halt
For the first time in the history of the event, even before when it was called ‘The Today’s Runners League’, the weather won the day and the Cross Country race at Oxleas Wood was postponed.
It was on Thursday morning of last week that I was put on alert because of concern about the impending snowfall. On Friday morning Plumstead Runners inspected the course and said that it would have to be altered because sections were considered to be unsafe. There were concerns about ice falling from the trees in the woods and sledging on the downhill open areas. Teams in East Kent felt there wasn’t a problem – mainly because their snowfall was minimal.
On Friday evening I received the following from Rob Bright:-
‘In view of the current weather conditions, particularly the dire state of roads in Kent and the possibility of further snow on Friday/Saturday evenings we have taken the decision to postpone the Oxleas Wood meeting until Sunday 3rd January. I hope that by making this decision early, this allows sufficient time to get the word around your members so that no one attempts a pointless, frustrating journey on Sunday.
Thank you all for your cooperation and support - and have a very Happy Christmas.
Rob Bright’
Several discussions have been made to re-schedule on another date because of a clash with other events, however the following has been issued:-
'I have to apologise to Thanet Roadrunners for choosing a date which conflicts with their Duathlon. I appreciate that this will make it difficult for therm to put out a team at Oxleas and also that there will be individuals from other clubs who have committed to doing the duathlon. Nevertheless, as we had no alternative dates and had to make a decision quite quickly, I think we are lumbered with this less than satisfactory situation – I am not prepared to reschedule once again into late February or March as people are Marathon training then. Also, we want to keep our 7 events intact or there will be major arguments over the individual championship. Perhaps next season we can set up a better system for dealing with late cancellations/postponements.
Rob Bright'
I think Rob has made the correct decision – it’s just unfortunate it clashes with another event.
Christmas Social
Don’t forget our tonight is our social evening and I hope that as many of you as possible can make it weather permitting. It’s a chance to have a chat with others and enjoy some nibbles and a drink. You may go for a run if you wish but at the moment I strongly advise you against it because of the current footway conditions.
Boxing Day Turkey Run
For those who fancy a run to work off the Christmas Fayre excess we usually meet at the Ditton Community centre at 9.30 to re-run the Ditton Turkey course.
Awards for 2009 & Awards Evening
It’s getting near that time when we will need to make nominations for male/female runner of the year and service to the club.
Nomination slips will be available from 6th January.
I would also like your views on what format you would like the evening to be i.e. sat down meal or a buffet. Could you let me or those very sociable girls know.
I know some of you have been asking so a date has been provisionally booked for 27th February.
New Members
With the increase in membership, I have the pleasure most weeks of introducing new members to the club. One of the difficulties is finding someone for them to run with as quite often they are not sure of their pace or how far they can run. It has been suggested that perhaps we could set up a group of volunteers who are prepared to take it turns to look after the new members for the first couple of weeks.
The eight who have volunteered so far are:-
Di Wright
Peter Foxall
Matt Fraser
Graham Pearson
Russell Morling
Sharon Barnett
Mathew Barnett
Rosie McMahon
If I have missed anyone off please let me know or if anyone else would like to volunteer, again please let me know. Many thanks.

If I don't see you before Christmas may I wish each and every one of you a lovely Chritmas and also wish you a Happy new Year
