Hi everyone, I hope you are all keeping well and enjoying the demise of the snow and icy conditions.
Excellent Performance at Dartford
What a great relief to everyone, especially the organisers, that the Dartford 10 was able to go ahead as planned. David Behagg of Dartford RR was tearing his hair out trying to come up with contingency plans should the race not take place. I wonder if they will re-consider the timing next year? Hopefully for our 10 miler in June, we should not have the same problems. It does make you wonder about organising a race during winter months. Do you remember Tun Wells half marathon a few years back when it snowed in early March, and had to abandon the race? That cost them a lot of money and they vowed never to get into that situation again.
It was bright sunny day on Sunday and we had an excellent turn-out of 35 runners, as good as what we have been getting at the X-C’s.
The men did very well, achieving 3rd place in a field of almost 1000 runners with 33 teams. They were only 14 points behind the 2nd place Tun Wells Harriers with Paddock Wood AC taking 1st place. We were led home by Steve Chalklen 21st, Ian Forrest 31st, Tim Erskine 38th and Paul Barton 40th. Well done chaps, that has got you off to a good start in the Grand Prix.! I am pleased that the nagging of Steve Chalklen on a Thursday evening down my gym has paid off – he has just got to get those spikes on he has bought and turn up at the cross country events.
The ladies did very well also achieving a 4th place out of 24 teams. They obtained the same points as Canterbury in 3rd place but lost it on count back of positions. Once again we were led home by Sharon Hawkins 5th, Penny Holden 23rd and Sharon Barnett 35th. Well done girls, in the Kent Grand Prix you should be joint 1st after the first race as Dulwich and Serpentine do not qualify.
KFL In Turmoil As Organisers Try to Re-Establish Events
The one casualty of the past few weeks as you can imagine has been the KFL X-C events with Oxleas being re-scheduled and Minnis Bay being cancelled.
The KFL is made up of seven races with the 8th event being a relay. Last week I was informed that Minnis Bay re-scheduled for the 28th February has now been cancelled. Thanet Road Runners did not want two races they were organising being back to back as they are also organising the Thanet 20 a week later on the 7th March. We are now considering having our 7th event on the 14th March which will be another Swanley as it was planned to organise the relay on that day.
Please have your sympathy for everyone especially Rob Bright who has to listen to the whims and wishes of us clubs. I really don’t envy him!
As you can imagine it now makes it difficult to award cross country trophies at our evening as the last event will be two weeks afterwards. I have agreed with Bob and Paula that we will award these at next year’s awards evening. This probably makes sense as the KFL season we are in is 2009/2010.
KFL - Fowlmead Deal
Remember this weekend on Sunday 24th January we are at Fowlmead Country Park, Sholden, Nr Deal. This is a new venue for us all so you need to refer to the map shown on the Canterbury Harriers site (Kent Fitness League) for a copy of the map on how to get there. Hopefully Jan & I will be there (knee permitting) to take care of you.
UPDATE:- Post code for event is CT14 0BA
Orienteering Event at Oakwood Park
I have just been informed by one of my work colleagues that an orienteering event will be held from Oakwood Park on Thursday 28th January at 7.00 pm. It will be similar to the one that many of you tried and very much enjoyed back in September. It will cost £2 and all the timing equipment will be provided. A bar will be open afterwards from which you will also able to order a meal. Please let me know if you are interested and I will give you more details
Awards for 2009 & Awards Evening
It’s getting near that time when we will need to make nominations for male/female runner of the year and service to the club.
Nomination slips will be available from tonight, however if you are unable to get to the club below is a voting slip. You can either copy or fill in or let Paula or myself know.

AWARDS FOR 2009 - VOTING SLIP
Each year we make awards to club members who have made an achievement during the previous calendar year. There are three awards for which you as club members can nominate someone to receive. The runner of the year (male and female) can be for either running achievement or service to the club. The Dennis Wilcox Plate is specific for service to the club. Please make your choice and do feel free to discuss with other club members or ask committee members if you want advice or information on previous winners etc.

I would also like your views on what format you would like the evening to be i.e. sat down meal or a buffet. Could you let me or the social girls know.
London Marathon Coach 2010
Bob is now taking names for the coach, so if you are running or would like to marshall then please put your name down on the list on a Wednesday evening or visit the message board.
New Members
With the increase in membership, I have the pleasure most weeks of introducing new members to the club. One of the difficulties is finding someone for them to run with as quite often they are not sure of their pace or how far they can run. It has been suggested that perhaps we could set up a group of volunteers who are prepared to take it turns to look after the new members for the first couple of weeks.
The ten who have volunteered so far are: -
Di Wright
Peter Foxall
Matt Fraser
Graham Pearson
Russell Morling
Sharon Barnett
Mathew Barnett
Rosie McMahon
Alan Probert
Sarah Brenton
If I have missed anyone off please let me know or if anyone else would like to volunteer, again please let me know. Many thanks.
I think come the beginning of this year we will have an intake of prospective new members.
