Hello everyone.
Another good turn out at Knole Park, Sevenoaks
Sunday saw another good turn-out at for 6th race in the KFL series with 292 runners crossing the finishing line. This is somewhat less than the beginning of the season when we had 455 finishers. Knole Park provides some lovely picturesque surroundings and is an ideal venue for cross-country running. The runners had to endure a cold, wet morning to face 5.7 miles of undulating, grassy tracks – many rendered slippery following heavy overnight rain.
Once again we were the third largest team on the park with 24 runners behind Dartford RR (41) and New Eltham (32). We represented over 8% of the field which is our highest percentage to date.
To the race itself Tim Erskine led us home in 21st position followed by Paul Barton 32nd, Jon Bond 38th and Yann Borges 42nd. For the ladies once again Penny Holden led us home in 9th, Sharon Barnett 18th, Julie Stoppani 26th and Kay Banfield 55th.
In the team results the ladies were 6th, the men 7th and a combined position of 5th due to other clubs not fielding full compliments. There are 18 teams who participate.
Well done everyone, sorry Jan & I were not there to support you but I am sure Nigel looked after you all.
Remaining KFL Race
For the final event there is a return to Swanley on the 14th March where the course will be changed to avoid repeating the route back in November. There will be no relay this year as it is important that we get 7 races in to complete the competition. However, there will be free food afterwards at pre-planned social event in the nearby Alexandra suite.
May be for the final event we can get an even larger turn-out than before and if you have never done a KFL XC, now is your chance because this is an easy course.
Farewell to Rosie
As you know eight of us went to the funeral in Manchester last Thursday to say goodbye to Rosie. It was a nice service and we were able to listen to snippets of some of the wonderful memories read out by family and friends.
I am putting together a summary of the service with the help of Steve Morris (the best man at Rosie and Shane’s wedding) who collated the day. We were not able to get inside the chapel because so many people attended. There were relay speakers outside but there was a lot of noise from the traffic on the main road and we were also underneath the flight path into Manchester airport.
Awards Evening
Don’t forget Saturday is our awards evening in Armstong Road when we will say thank you and well done to members of the club for 2009. We get under way at 8.00 and remember that the first drink is on the club. The format is that usually after a few opening words, we will enjoy a buffet followed by the awards ceremony. A disco will then play where you will have the usual chance to show off your prowess on the dance floor.
If you haven’t put your name down to attend please let Sarah or myself know now.
If possible can we have a volunteer to take some photos of the evening?
London Marathon Coach 2010
I expect you have all seen the message on the board from Bob that the coach is now full.
New Members
With the increase in membership, I have the pleasure most weeks of introducing new members to the club. One of the difficulties is finding someone for them to run with as quite often they are not sure of their pace or how far they can run. It has been suggested that perhaps we could set up a group of volunteers who are prepared to take it turns to look after the new members for the first couple of weeks.
The ten who have volunteered so far are: -
Di Wright
Peter Foxall
Matt Fraser
Graham Pearson
Russell Morling
Sharon Barnett
Mathew Barnett
Alan Probert
Sarah Brenton
If I have missed anyone off please let me know or if anyone else would like to volunteer, again please let me know. Many thanks.

Wednesday’s Route
Tonight’s route is the last in my winter routes repertoire; it is my favourite as it has short sharp uphill and long downhill stretches.
Queens Rd / Holland Rd
Go left along Armstrong Rd to the R’bt and go left then right down Forest Hill. Continue down Courtney Rd to Tovil Rd, turn left then right into Church Rd and take the second left into Wharf Rd. Go across Tovil Bridge over the railway crossing, up Bower Lane and turn left into Upper Fant Rd. Go along to the end and turn right up Hackney Rd. At the top turn left into Fant Lane and continue round to the right to bring you up to the Tonbridge Rd by the traffic lights. Cross over into Queens Rd (waft in the Fish & Chips) and run along Queens Rd to the London Rd.
Cross over the footbridge and turn left along London Rd. Take the 1st left down Buckland Hill, over the High Level Bridge and up to the Week St by the East Station. Turn left then right into County Rd to go up past the prison entrance to Holland Rd.
Turn right into Holland Rd along to Sittingbourne Rd and turn right to run down to the traffic lights. Cross over into Watt Tyler Way and continue through to Upper Stone St. Turn left up Upper Stone St. to the Loose Rd, continue to the traffic lights at Armstrong Rd and right back to the centre.
6.5 miles
Bower St /Holland Rd
Go up Bower Lane and continue up Bower Road to the Tonbridge Road. Cross over and continue up Bower Street. At the top turn left into the alley way that brings you out into Bower Mount Road and turn right. Run down to the London Road, turn left and at the traffic lights turn right down Buckland Hill to join the main route.
4.5 miles
A passing thought
Along with Sunflowers, Daffodils was another of Rosie’s favourite flowers. It was appropriate therefore that the following was read out at her service:-
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
~William Wordsworth, "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud," 1804
Take care all of you, be safe and I look forward to seeing you later.
David
