Hello everyone.
A sunny day at Swanley didn’t draw the numbers out
Sunday saw the last of the KFL cross-country races for the 2009/2010 season. It was an excellent day in the park with warm sunny weather and excellent conditions under foot, many runners chose to run in normal road shoes as it was too firm for spikes.
Attendance was well down on previous races probably because it was ‘Mother’s Day’ and there were other events going on around the county. There were 256 finishers of which 15 were harriers so were well down on our numbers. Normally we are the third largest team on the park but this time we down to about 6th.
The men were led home by Jon Bond in 29th position supported by Lyndon Gurr 58th, Michael White 94th, Craig Peake 129th, Paul Sanders 142nd, Mel Paszkowski 146th and Gerald Krause 148th. Fortunately we had just enough to make a men’s team. However, they finished in their lowest position for the season of 14th out of 18.
The ladies had an excellent turn-out and were once again led home by Penny Holden 9th, Sharon Barnett 17th, Julie Stopanni 20th, Gill Monk 54th, Catherine Slade 57th, Karena Norton 68th, Diane George 81st and Stella Trench 83rd. Their effort enabled them to finish in 5th place, the highest of the season.
Overall for the season we finished in 8th position with the ladies 6th in their league and the men in 11th. We didn’t pick up any season trophies at the award ceremony afterwards as these went to Paddock Wood (overall) and Larkfield (ladies). However, we picked up a packet of Maltesers in the Swanley race draw for Craig Peake!!
Well done everyone who took part in the events this season with a special well done to the following runners who completed all 7 races:-
Penny Holden
Julie Stopanni
Diane George
Stella Trench
Lyndon Gurr
Craig Peake.
It is worth noting that only 16 ladies completed all 7 races of which 4 came from our club – well done girls!!
Running Fitness Magazine ‘Up Front’ – Club Watch Feature – Photo Shot
I am in the process of preparing an article for the Running Fitness Magazine which has a feature that profiles interesting running clubs around the country. I will mention about the history of the club, races we organise and talk about some inspiring runners. I expect you will have all seen the message from Bob a few weeks ago calling for photos of runners. One of the photos we would like to do is a collective shot of club members in their new livery and we would like to do this on the evening of the 24th March. So could as many of you as possible please turn up that evening in your club kit.
London Marathon Coach 2010
I expect you have all seen the message on the board from Bob that the coach is now full. Bob would now like to collect the fare of £8 each.
Curry Evening – Sunday April 11th
Yes we haven’t had one of these for a while so we are booking the Mughal Dynasty on Sunday evening the 11th April at 7.00pm. It will be an excellent way to recover after the Paddock Wood Half Marathon earlier in the day. We will assemble beforehand in the White Horse in London Road from 6.00pm.
The list has been started at the club for you to include your name on or alternatively please contact either Paula or myself.
Accompanying Runners for Prospective New Members
Many thanks to all the volunteers who are helping out with looking after prospective new members, it is very much appreciated.
As you know with the increase in membership, I have the pleasure most weeks of introducing new members to the club. One of the difficulties is finding someone for them to run with as quite often they are not sure of their pace or how far they can run. The following group of volunteers are prepared to take it turns to look after the new members for the first couple of weeks.
The ten who have volunteered so far are: -
Di Wright
Peter Foxall
Matt Fraser
Graham Pearson
Russell Morling
Sharon Barnett
Mathew Barnett
Alan Probert
Sarah Brenton
If I have missed anyone off please let me know or if anyone else would like to volunteer, again please let me know. Many thanks.

A passing thought
A few members have asked me what they need to do to improve their performance. One of the important things is speedwork/interval training and over the next few weeks the club will be addressing the matter to see the best way forward. I have made some suggestions of what they can do in the meantime but it also about finding time to make the necessary commitment, which can be difficult with the busy lives we lead.
With this in mind I came across the following quote on achieving goals:-
One half of knowing what you want is understanding what you must give up before you get it. ~Sidney Howard
(Not only can this mean other pastimes, but it could also mean certain culinary pleasures – oh dear!!)
Take care all of you, be safe and I look forward to seeing you later.
